The Gwangju Biennale 2014

With a nod toward the art world's favorite New Wave band, Talking Heads, this year's biennale, titled "Burning Down the House," promises to evoke the city's spirited revolutionary past-more specifically, the 1980 Gwangju Uprising-a popular revolt against dictatorship. Celebrating the "hedonism of sound and movement," curator Jessica Morgan, formerly chief curator of Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art, has gathered over 100 international artists from more than 35 countries. Morgan has commissioned 30 new works addressing themes such as Asia as an emerging consumer culture and methods of architectural development in the urban landscape.
